When did we stop looking at each other?

A traveling portrait project documenting lives across Sonoma County. One face, one story, one moment of genuine presence.

Know about the project

about the project

1,000 Faces.
One Story.

Our mobile photography studio travels across Sonoma County, setting up in farmers markets, community centers, schools, and street corners. You sit. We photograph you against a stark white backdrop. Nothing to hide behind, nothing to distract. You write, a sentence, a memory,
a hope. It is a human mirror. Whatever feels true.

Eye to Eyes exists because every face carries a story worth stopping for. And because truly seeing another person is how we come to understand ourselves.

This is us

Your words,
your handwriting,
your face.

The written note is not a caption. It is the other half of the portrait.
Together, image and handwriting form something a photograph alone can never be.

The experience

What happens

when you sit down

1. You show up

Find our mobile studio at a location near you. No appointment needed. Walk in as you are. The backdrop is white. The space is quiet.

2. You are seen

We photograph you. Just you. No styling, no performance. The camera captures exactly who you are in this moment.

3. You write

A sentence. A memory. A hope. Your own handwriting alongside your portrait. Your story becomes part of a permanent archive of Sonoma County lives.

Where it’s going

Every portrait.

One Space.
Sonoma Valley
Museum of Art.

In 2027, all portraits will be exhibited at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art. From one to one community. From there, the exhibition travels. The archive becomes a book.

Meet the founder

Jock McDonald

Jock McDonald has spent 40 years photographing people across the world. A few years ago he noticed something. At community gatherings, at dinner tables, at bus stops, people weren't looking at each other anymore. They were looking down into their phones. Eye to Eyes is his response to becoming connected again.
